ENEA scientific research marks a new step in material science

Results presented at the CIRP Conference on Intelligent Computation in Manufacturing Engineering 2020

The ENEA, University of Salento and DTA will be present at the 14th edition of the CIRP Conference on Intelligent Computation in Manufacturing Engineering (ICME) that takes place from 15 to 17 July in Naples (Italy).

This Conference aims to provide an international forum to exchange knowledge, experience and results as well to discuss progress on the state-of-the-art and future trends in intelligent computation methods and tools applied to manufacturing processes and systems. This virtual edition 2020 will focus on the topic « Innovative and Cognitive Production Technologies and Systems ».

In this frame, Michele Giannuzzi, DTA aerospace engineer and adjunct professor at University of Salento, will present the paper « Validation of TiAlN functional coatings through cryo-tribological characterization using a pin-on-disk experiment » in a dedicated session entitled « Grinding, Gear Manufacturing & Quality Assurance ».

« The introduction in the industrial world of new technologies for chip removal, both at high speed and in cryogenic conditions» comments Antonella Rizzo, ENEA senior researcher at the Department of Technologies and Material processing for Sustainability, « is facing new challenges and opening new horizons to research for a sustainable future technology. Our work focuses on the choice of materials and coatings, and we studied the phenomenon of wear of tools coated thanks to the technologies developed at ENEA’s laboratory in Brindisi (Apulia region). We designed and developed an innovative tribometer needed to simulate high-speed wear processes during cryogenic machining the results are significant and interesting and promise to be easily convertible into a higher Technological Maturity Level. We will continue our research and we really hope that our work can pave the way for a sustainable future in material science ».

The work has been carried out by a team of researchers from Apulia region (Italy) led by Antonella Rizzo from ENEA Research Centre of Brindisi and in collaboration with the Department of Engineering for Innovation, University of Salento and DTA.

“We are very proud” comments Giuseppe Acierno, President of DTA “that young talents from Apulia region are pushing the frontiers of knowledge in an international context. Innovation, new technologies and advanced skills are key to face global challenges in aerospace. At the DTA we strongly believe in the importance to inspire, and train, the next generations of scientists”. The CIRP ICME Conference is organised by Fraunhofer Joint Laboratory of Excellence on Advanced Production Technology (Fh-J_LEAPT UniNaples), Dept. of Chemical, Materials and Industrial Production Engineering, University of Naples Federico II with the support of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) and the Regional Government of Campania (RGC).

This scientific publication has been realised thanks to the activities carried out our project “TEMA” – TEcnologie Produttive e Manutentive applicate ai Propulsori Aeronautici – funded by MIUR under the National Operational Program “Research and Competitiveness” 2007-2013
